Smiling all the Way From A to Z -- I

Today's letter has much to do with writing and is an exciting part of the story creation process. The thing that starts with the letter I that makes me smile is...

INSPIRATION

The moment where an idea for a story or a scene pops into your mind and you can't stop thinking about it! Oh, man, it is a brilliant feeling to have the idea formulate out of thin air without even thinking, "I want to come up with a really great idea for a book or scene." Like lightning, it shatters through your scull, twists, turns, and tantalizes you until you start typing it out on the computer.

My first book, FÉLICITÉ FOUND, came from a dream I had where one tiny part of it stayed with me for weeks on end. The intense part of the dream continued to wedge itself into my mind until I started writing it, or else I would have burst into a million pieces of Julia flesh. Icky!

My second book, BOUND (going to be a trilogy), came to me while I was watching "Darbie O'Gill and the Little People" an old school Irish film featuring Sean Connery. A part in the movie sparked my book's idea, I did a bunch of research, and then bodda bing bodda boom I was writing it out.

My third book, SPHERICAL, shattered my senses as I was attempting to fall asleep one fateful night. I ended up reading something and one word in it opened up this big ball of dystopian awesomeness. Weeks later, more of it formulated in my mind while I was exercising.

Just two nights ago, I came up with another idea for a future project while I was taking a shower. Let's just say a lot of the time ideas float into my mind with the steam of the hot shower water. Lots of time to think in there, ya know (well, if you take long showers like me).

Anyway, inspiration makes me smile and giggle and often times jump up and down screaming with joy emanating from my skin into the air around me.

How are you inspired to write? Does inspiration make you smile? And starting with the letter I, what makes you smile?

  1. Funny how inspiration can be triggered by anything and hit you at any moment. Inspiration used to hit me during the day, but now it's usually at night when things are quiet. If you want to know what else inspires me, hop on over to my blog to see. ;)

  2. Inspiration does make me smile. After many, many times when I terrified or surprised my husband he had to learn to ignore my outbursts.

  3. It's so fun to read about the way you're inspired to write! As far as what inspires me, well, my A to Z theme is about that (as you know). ;)

  4. I will usually see something in a movie or hear something in a song that sparks an idea.

  5. How am I inspired to write? I'm not quite sure. I guess it just oozes into my brain when I'm bored (which happens more often than not). I don't have colorful dreams like you, and that makes me envious.

    1. You wouldn't be envious of my occasional nightmares. They are no fun, but I guess that what I get for having extremely vivid dreams.

  6. The occasions when something enters my head and inspires me are standing either in the shower or at the sink doing dishes. (Doing dishes is such a mindless activity, which is why I like it; an ideal time for the unconscious to be free to play)

  11. I love that you're flying through a-z with a smile, sharing happiness with others. :)

Inspiration is exhilarating. It always makes me smile when I've been humming and hawing about a piece in my book. When out of the blue, the solution hits me, it's such a gratifying feeling, worth it's weight in smiles. :)

Have fun with a-z. Happy smiling. :)
