What Makes You Laugh

My brother has a knack for saying funny things off the fly. For instance, my family got together on Sunday, and my dad asked one of my nephews to be careful not to break something. My brother said to my dad, "It's your fault for having kids who had kids." We all started laughing. Alright, maybe you had to be there... *shrugs*

Another example: Likewise, on Sunday, we were talking about my family helping me move next month. Funny bro said, "I'll be sure to schedule a colonoscopy on that day." I don't have that much stuff. Really! Haha My dad ended up saying, "I'll be scheduling a nap that day."

Anyway, there are parts of my books that crack me up every time I read them. Sometimes I wonder how I came up with those scenes. But when I'm in the thick of writing, my stories speak to me and tell me what to write--be it funny or sad or horrific.

I make myself laugh sometimes. Ok, that sounds funny and quite possibly crazy, I know. For example, a few weeks ago, I was working out at the gym. I decided to watch the pilot episode of a series I've watched before: Stargate SG1. As I was running on the treadmill, I was smiling so big and giggling quietly from remembering just how much I LOVE that show.

Whenever I see a Beagle, giggles find their way out of my lips. That's my favorite type of dog. Sigh!

The other day, I had a nice chat with a fellow Twitter/writing friend, Rob Weidmann. Somehow we got on the subject of Star Wars. He informed me that May the Fourth is the official Star Wars Day. Get it? May the Fourth be with You! haha I still laugh about that one.

So, what makes you laugh? Does it take a TV show or a book to bring to laughing tears? Do you have a family member or friend who keeps you on your chuckling toes? Do you laugh at yourself? Do your own books crack you up? What's something funny you've heard recently?

Writing. Jewels.

PS: The comic above cracked me up way too much, I think.

  1. Whoa, I got a mention in the blog post about funny stuff. That's flattering. It was fun to get together, by the way.

  2. I think I have an easy laugh. Not often in books, but definitely with movies and TV shows. A few things in my second book make me smile, although not laugh out loud.
As for making my laugh, no one can do that like my wife.

  3. Okay, you've just convinced me to give Stargate another go. There are so many episodes that I haven't seen.

  4. Love Star Wars day. Also, the day after is Revenge of the Fifth.

    Just saying.

I've had moments when reading stuff I've written in the past where I laugh at a scene. But it doesn't happen often. I'm still working on my humor writing.

  5. Books bring the best laughs to me. I don't write real funny stuff, more with jabs of satire or sarcasm. One person close to me read my book and said, "I could tell who wrote this even without the name on it." I also find some Tweets funny, especially those by writers who have peculiar eating habits.

    1. That's cool that the person who read your book could tell it was you. That means you probably are very sarcastic. And people with peculiar eating habits are supercool!

  6. I guess it just depends on my mood what makes me laugh. But that cartoon up top is hilarious! Love it!

  7. I laugh a lot.

It's funny, one of my friends was actually blogging today about how she doesn't laugh easily (she chuckles or smiles, but saves the "real laughs" for things that are really, really funny) and I commented that the video she posted makes me laugh so hard I usually pee my pants.

    Good times.

But yes. I love laughing, and I don't hide my laughter. I often snicker at inappropriate times (when people are praying, when kids are being disciplined) and laugh out loud a lot, too.

  8. Hi Julia,
I just across your blog. Nice post! I make myself laugh sometimes too. I also have characters in my novel (the one I've been writing for the past year and a half) that I just think are the best. So I get what your saying! I also love beagles! I also think pugs are funny dogs.

    Great blog, keep in touch.

  9. It's so much fun to find things that make you laugh. When I was in a play, I had to hit the little helicopter thing on a guy's hat to make it spin around. Well, one night, I missed and actually hit him in the back of the head, almost knocking the hat off. I barely got through that scene before bursting out laughing.

  10. I just got back from church camp. Throw a bunch of us into a room with 340 campers, deprive us of sleep, and the wit from the adult counselors was dripping. I laughed so hard many times over. One of my memorable moments was when two guys came into the camp office. As part of their continuing conversation, one said to the other, "Tell the game warden I'm sorry." It was funny at the time--totally off the wall.

  11. Laughter is so important to me. I like snarky, witty humor but also dumb silly stuff. Life is to short to be serious and grumpy all the time. Three cheers for humor and for what ever makes you smile !!! (:

  12. My three-year-old keeps me laughing very consistently. Her walking into the kitchen yesterday, with a blanket tied round her shoulders, saying "I am the Queen" in a pseudo-posh accent was enough to crack me up! OK, sorry for this sickeningly cute comment. ;)
